Ex-Mets starter reports team surprising lowball offer to Pete Alonso and…

This offseason, Juan Soto received an unprecedented 15-year contract worth $765 million from the New York Mets. The Mets are attempting to reach an agreement with Pete Alonso, but they might not be able to provide him with what he desires.

Carlos Baerga, a former Mets infielder who currently broadcasts in Spanish for the Cleveland Guardians, claimed on X that the Mets made Alonso an offer of $90 million for three years with the chance to opt out each year. There is a “sizable gap” between the two parties, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Between 1996 and 1998, Baerga appeared in 306 games for the Mets. During his career, he was a two-time Silver Slugger and three-time All-Star.

Baerga’s report cannot be verified. Nonetheless, there is cause for concern that the negotiations are lacking. Any organisation would be in a difficult financial position as a result of the agreement Alonso signed. Alonso might agree to a contract for up to $200 million. Signing Alonso and Juan Soto to mega-deals in the same summer is a reach, even for Steve Cohen.

One Mets fan favourite is Alonso. The Mets will be unable to replace the power he provides from first base, and he has been named an All-Star four times. Since joining the league in 2019, Alonso has amassed more home runs than Aaron Judge. He is expected to sign a six-year contract worth $174 million, according to Spotrac, but the actual amount may be more.

Few clubs need or can afford Alonso, which is advantageous for the Mets. The vacancy has already been filled by other needy teams. Christian Walker was signed by the Houston Astros. Paul Goldschmidt was signed by the New York Yankees. Carlos Santana was signed by the Cleveland Guardians, who dealt Josh Naylor to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Alonso’s return to the Mets is certain, but it might take some time for the team to meet his demands.
