In the wake of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2024 season, team owner Art Rooney II has addressed the team’s quarterback situation, focusing on the futures of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Both quarterbacks are set to become unrestricted free agents, and Rooney has made it clear that retaining one of them is a priority for the organization.
During a recent media session, Rooney expressed his preference for re-signing either Wilson or Fields, acknowledging the importance of stability at the quarterback position. He stated, “I think they’re both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them. So that’ll be the priority, and I think that will give us the best opportunity to move forward.”
However, Rooney also noted that bringing both quarterbacks back is unlikely, as each sees himself as a starter. He explained, “I wouldn’t close the door, but I’d say it’s probably unlikely. I think both of them see themselves as starters, and I don’t know that they want to share the same job again next year.”
The 2024 season saw both Wilson and Fields taking turns as the team’s starting quarterback. Fields began the season under center, leading the Steelers to a 4-2 record while passing for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns, along with 231 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
Wilson, after recovering from a calf injury, took over in Week 7 and achieved a 6-1 record in his first seven games, finishing the season with 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Despite their strong start, the Steelers ended the season on a five-game losing streak, including a 28-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
This downturn has intensified discussions about the team’s quarterback plans moving forward.
Age and contract considerations are significant factors in the decision-making process. Wilson, who turned 36 during the 2024 season, would likely command a higher salary, with a projected market value of a two-year deal averaging $38.7 million annually.
Fields, set to turn 26 in March, presents a younger and potentially more cost-effective option, with a projected one-year contract valued at approximately $8.85 million.
Both quarterbacks have expressed interest in returning to Pittsburgh. Fields, eager for continuity, stated, “I’m kind of tired of learning a new offense every year. This will be my third in four years. Of course, I’d love to be back.”
Wilson has also indicated a desire to continue his career with the Steelers.
Rooney emphasized that addressing the quarterback position is a critical component of the team’s offseason strategy. He mentioned that while re-signing one of the current quarterbacks is a priority, the team is also exploring options in the upcoming NFL Draft. Rooney noted, “Obviously, we will be looking in the draft as well either this year or next. That (quarterback position) has to be the priority.”
