Darryl Sittler Donates $21 Million Toward Maple Leafs Arena Renovation in Historic Gesture
Toronto, April 27, 2025
In a landmark act of generosity and devotion to the franchise that defined his career, Toronto Maple Leafs legend Darryl Sittler has donated a staggering $21 million toward the renovation of the team’s iconic home arena. The gift marks one of the largest personal contributions in the history of Canadian professional sports and is set to reshape the future of hockey in Toronto.
Sittler, now 74, remains one of the most revered figures in Maple Leafs history, best known for his record-setting 10-point game in 1976 and his enduring leadership during the franchise’s challenging years. His donation comes at a critical time, as Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) prepares for a multi-phase renovation project aimed at modernizing the arena and enhancing the fan experience.
The newly revamped arena—soon to be renamed “Sittler Centre” in his honor—will feature state-of-the-art training facilities, updated seating, advanced digital experiences, and a permanent exhibit commemorating the Maple Leafs’ most legendary players. Construction is expected to begin this summer and will be completed by the 2026–27 NHL season.
“This organization has given me so much—my career, my memories, and a lifelong connection with the greatest fans in hockey,” Sittler said during a press conference at Scotiabank Arena, joined by current Leafs stars and alumni. “This is my way of giving back and helping ensure future generations of Leafs fans have a home that lives up to the legacy we all share.”
Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan called the donation “a defining moment in the club’s modern era” and praised Sittler not only for his generosity, but for “showing once again what leadership truly means.”
The city of Toronto plans to recognize Sittler’s contribution with a special ceremony later this year.
