How It All Started: Otega Oweh Speaks Out
“My love for basketball started at a very young age. I remember my dad would tell me stories about the great players of the past, the legends who transformed the game and captured the hearts of millions. As a young child, I didn’t fully grasp the significance of those stories, but something about the way he spoke about the game sparked a sense of curiosity and wonder in me. I would watch him play in our backyard, mimicking his movements, trying to perfect my shot, even if it was just a simple layup. I was so fascinated by how the game brought people together, and that was when I knew basketball was something I wanted to pursue.”
Growing up, basketball was more than just a sport for me—it was a way of life. My dad wasn’t just a coach; he was my first mentor. I would spend hours with him, watching games, practicing drills, and listening to his wisdom about what it took to be great. At the time, I didn’t realize how much of an impact those moments would have on me. The passion and dedication he showed for the game rubbed off on me, and slowly, basketball became something I couldn’t live without.
It wasn’t about just learning how to dribble or shoot—it was about the lessons I learned through every practice, every mistake, and every small victory. My dad taught me about perseverance and discipline, two qualities that would become the foundation of my character, both on and off the court. Those lessons stuck with me throughout my early years, even as I transitioned into playing competitively. As I began to play in school leagues, I started to see just how much work, dedication, and sacrifice went into becoming the best.
But it wasn’t always easy. There were times when I felt discouraged, when it seemed like no matter how hard I worked, I wasn’t improving fast enough. My dad was always there to remind me that the journey wasn’t about immediate results; it was about consistent effort and growth. Those words of encouragement kept me pushing forward, even when I wanted to quit.
Looking back now, I realize that basketball became more than just a game to me. It became a pathway to discipline, personal growth, and deeper connections with the people around me. It was my dad who started it all—his love for the game, his dedication to my development, and the invaluable lessons he instilled in me. Today, I continue to honor that legacy, striving to not only be the best basketball player I can be, but also a person who upholds the same values of perseverance and passion that my dad taught me all those years ago.
