Sergio Pérez looks set to see out the 2024 season at the very least. He endured a miserable weekend at the São Paulo Grand Prix, but there’s little indication that his future with Red Bull is under immediate threat. Despite his struggles in Brazil, including a dismal performance in qualifying and a lackluster race result, Pérez remains an important asset to the team, especially given Red Bull’s dominance in the constructor’s championship and his role as Max Verstappen’s teammate.
Pérez’s performance has come under increasing scrutiny in recent months, with the Mexican driver failing to match the pace of his championship-leading teammate Verstappen. In São Paulo, Pérez finished outside the points, and his weekend was compounded by a series of on-track incidents and misfortunes. However, his situation is not unique within the team. Red Bull, although ruthless in their pursuit of success, has shown a degree of patience with Pérez, knowing the value of having a reliable second driver to support their title ambitions.
It’s clear that Red Bull wants consistency from its drivers, especially given the team’s incredible pace and dominance. While Pérez has struggled to adapt to the ever-evolving car this season, he still manages to score valuable points for the team, which is crucial in securing the Constructors’ Championship. Additionally, Pérez has shown flashes of brilliance, with impressive podium finishes and a race win in Azerbaijan, demonstrating that he is still capable of strong performances on occasion.
For Pérez, the 2024 season could be pivotal in determining his future in Formula 1. If he can’t find a way to close the gap to Verstappen and maintain a higher level of consistency, the pressure will mount. But for now, Red Bull seems committed to giving him the time he needs to turn things around. With the team’s focus firmly on securing both championships, Pérez’s seat remains secure—for the time being, at least—offering him the chance to turn around his fortunes and prove that he deserves to stay at the front of the grid.
