In a surprising move, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has announced that the team will part ways with veteran quarterback Russell Wilson after just one season. Wilson, who joined the Steelers following stints with the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos, led Pittsburgh to a postseason appearance this year, though they were eliminated in the Wild Card round.

The decision to release Wilson comes as the quarterback enters free agency this summer. NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Wilson is not expected to return to Pittsburgh, suggesting he may seek opportunities elsewhere. Wilson added to the speculation with a cryptic social media post thanking Jesus for a “new day.”

Steelers owner Art Rooney II acknowledged the difficulty in retaining both Wilson and backup quarterback Justin Fields, who is also entering free agency. Rooney noted that both players desire starting roles, making it unlikely for both to remain with the team next season.
