Romeo Lavia, a £58 million acquisition for Chelsea, is sidelined for the remainder of the season due to an injury nightmare

Romeo Lavia, a star player for Chelsea, has suffered another injury setback that will keep him out of action for the remainder of the season.

The Belgian international, who spent £58 million to join Chelsea from Southampton last summer, has had a terrible season thus far. In his first season, he has played in just 30 minutes of football.

The Blues released the following statement on social media: “After suffering a setback in his recuperation, midfielder Romeo Lavia will regrettably miss the remainder of our 2023–24 campaign.

“Recent medical assessments have confirmed that Lavia, who sustained a significant thigh injury against Crystal Palace back in December, will not feature again this season.”

However, a foot ailment kept the 20-year-old out of action for the first four months of the season before he finally made his much-anticipated debut against Crystal Palace in December.

He entered the game for the last thirty minutes, but Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino said after the game that he had sustained another injury, this time to his thigh.

Although Lavia’s return date was initially unknown, it was anticipated that the injury would heal in a month.

Nevertheless, Chelsea has now declared that the former Manchester City trainee will miss the remainder of the season, following minimal progress in his recuperation.

The news was made almost three months after he was hurt playing for the London team for the first time since joining in the summer, against Crystal Palace.

Lavia is just one of several players that Chelsea has acquired that have had severe injury issues.

After spending £52 million to replace RB Leipzig, Christopher Nkunku signed last summer but has only played twice in the Premier League.

After two ACL injuries, Chelsea broke the bank in 2022 when they signed for £72 million, but over the course of two seasons, they have only managed 15 Premier League appearances.

In his debut season as the team’s manager, Pochettino has had a challenging season with the Blues.

With 11 games remaining, they are now ranked 11th in the table. They also failed to win any hardware after losing to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
