In an emotional and unexpected announcement that has thrilled Collingwood supporters, former club favourite Ben Johnson has officially returned to the Magpies — this time as part of the senior coaching team.
The news broke earlier today at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where the atmosphere was electric ahead of the team’s weekend fixture. Johnson, a fan-favourite known for his hard-nosed play and relentless drive during the 2000s, will now take on a senior coaching role focused on player development and team culture.
The 2003 Anzac Day Medalist and 2010 premiership player had previously been involved in community football and mentoring programs, but his return to the AFL stage — and to Collingwood in particular — is being hailed as a major boost for the club.
Club CEO Craig Kelly praised Johnson’s return during a press conference held at the stadium:
“Ben bleeds black and white. His experience, passion for the club, and deep understanding of what it means to be a Collingwood player make him a perfect fit for this new chapter.”
Johnson will reportedly work closely with the defensive unit and emerging talent, passing on the wisdom gained from his 235-game career, all played in the black and white jumper.
In his brief statement to the media, Johnson expressed deep gratitude and excitement.
“This club shaped who I am. I’m proud to be back, proud to give back, and proud to help guide the next generation of Pies,” Johnson said.
Supporters erupted on social media, many recalling his fearless play and trademark run off half-back. The club store even saw a surge in retro jersey sales within hours of the announcement.
With Collingwood still in the thick of the AFL season, Johnson’s return adds a powerful emotional lift and veteran insight as the Magpies look to push deep into September.
More details on his coaching responsibilities are expected in the coming days.
