In an inspiring act of generosity and community leadership, NBA Hall of Famer and New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing has announced a personal investment of $4.5 million to transform his historic Harlem residence into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The announcement came early Friday morning during a press conference held at the site of the future shelter, where Ewing stood alongside local officials, youth advocates, and nonprofit leaders. The shelter—set to be named The Ewing House of Hope—will offer not only safe housing but also access to mental health support, educational programs, job training, and mentorship opportunities for at-risk youth aged 16–24.
“This city gave me everything,” Ewing said, visibly moved. “Now it’s time for me to give back in a meaningful, lasting way. No child should have to sleep on the streets or feel like they don’t have a future.”
Located in the heart of Harlem, the residence has been part of Ewing’s life since his early Knicks days in the 1980s. Rather than sell the property or let it sit unused, Ewing chose to reimagine it as a place of hope and opportunity for the city’s most vulnerable.
The project will be carried out in partnership with Covenant House New York, a well-known organization dedicated to helping homeless and runaway youth. Renovations are expected to begin immediately, with the shelter scheduled to open its doors by Spring 2026.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams praised Ewing’s commitment, calling it “a game-changing act of kindness and vision.”
“Patrick Ewing has always been a hero on the court,” Adams said. “Today, he’s proven he’s just as much of a champion off the court.”
The initiative comes at a time when youth homelessness in New York City has reached alarming levels, with estimates suggesting over 4,000 unaccompanied minors are without stable housing on any given night. Advocates say efforts like Ewing’s are essential to closing the gap in services and providing meaningful pathways out of poverty.
Community reaction to the news has been overwhelmingly positive, with fans and residents applauding Ewing’s lifelong connection to the city and his decision to use his legacy to uplift the next generation.
