In a powerful display of compassion and leadership off the field, Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Mike Singletary has announced a personal investment of $11.5 million to convert his historic family estate on the city’s South Side into a state-of-the-art shelter and resource center for homeless youth.
The initiative, titled “Singletary House of Hope,” aims to address the growing crisis of youth homelessness in Chicago. The facility will provide not only safe housing but also access to education, job training, mental health support, and mentorship programs — all in an effort to break the cycle of poverty and instability for vulnerable young people.
“I’ve always believed that leadership means using your influence to lift others up,” Singletary said at a press conference held outside the property. “These kids deserve more than survival — they deserve a chance to thrive. This home was built on faith, family, and strength. Now it’s going to stand for hope.”
The shelter is expected to serve more than 80 youths annually, ranging from ages 16 to 24, with transitional housing programs designed to move residents toward independence. Singletary is partnering with local nonprofits, mental health experts, and city officials to ensure the center offers holistic and sustainable support.
City leaders, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, praised Singletary’s commitment. “This is not just a donation. It’s a transformation — of a building, of lives, and of what it means to serve your community. Mike Singletary is showing us what true legacy looks like.”
Singletary, a key figure in the Bears’ legendary 1985 Super Bowl-winning defense, has long been active in philanthropic work, particularly with youth mentorship and Christian outreach. But this move marks his most personal and ambitious charitable endeavor yet.
Renovations are already underway, with the center expected to open its doors by spring 2026. A portion of the funding will also go toward scholarships, community outreach, and long-term operational support.
As the crowd gathered at the event erupted into applause, one local high school student said it best: “Mike Singletary used to protect the end zone. Now he’s protecting our future.”
