Netflix has officially announced the release date for its latest original sports documentary, “The Underdog,” centered around Canterbury Bulldogs icon Hazem El Masri — and fans won’t have to wait long. The film is set to premiere globally on June 20, 2025.
The long-rumored documentary, which has been in production since early 2024, tells the incredible story of El Masri’s journey from a young Lebanese immigrant to becoming the NRL’s all-time highest point scorer and one of the most beloved figures in Australian rugby league history.
Netflix confirmed the release this morning via social media with a dramatic teaser trailer featuring rare archival footage, behind-the-scenes interviews, and commentary from former teammates, rivals, and media personalities.
“The Underdog is more than just a sports story — it’s about identity, faith, loyalty, and triumph in the face of adversity,” Netflix Australia said in a statement.
A Rugby League Legend
Hazem El Masri, often referred to as “El Magic,” spent his entire NRL career with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Known for his pinpoint goal kicking, unwavering humility, and strong connection to his community, El Masri played 317 games between 1996 and 2009, racking up a record-breaking 2,418 points.
Beyond his statistics, El Masri became a symbol of multicultural Australia, proudly representing his Muslim faith and Lebanese heritage during a time when both were often misunderstood in mainstream Australian culture. His role as an ambassador for unity and inclusion cemented his legacy far beyond the field.
A Story of Faith, Family, and Football
Directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker George Basha (“The Combination,” “Brothers in Arms”), The Underdog features exclusive interviews with El Masri himself, as well as insights from Bulldogs legends like Willie Mason, Sonny Bill Williams, and Steve Mortimer. The documentary also includes commentary from NRL historians and community leaders who explore El Masri’s influence both on and off the field.
“This isn’t just about football,” Basha said. “It’s about a man who stood tall when it wasn’t always easy. Hazem’s story will inspire people from all walks of life.”
The film dives deep into pivotal moments of his career, including the 2004 NRL Grand Final triumph, racial tensions in the early 2000s, his handling of media scrutiny, and his role as a mentor in Western Sydney communities after retirement.
Fan Reaction: Eager Anticipation
The announcement has already sparked excitement across social media, particularly among Bulldogs fans and members of the Muslim-Australian community. The hashtag #TheUnderdogNetflix began trending within hours of the announcement.
“Hazem is more than a player to us. He’s a role model. Can’t wait to see his story told properly,” one fan posted.
Another wrote: “About time someone made a doco on the GOAT.”
Global Appeal
While the film has a deeply Australian focus, Netflix executives believe The Underdog will resonate with international audiences due to its universal themes of perseverance, identity, and quiet heroism.
Netflix’s Vice President of Documentary Content, Rachel Sanders, commented:
“This is a powerful, deeply human story. Whether or not you follow rugby league, Hazem El Masri’s journey is the kind of story that stays with you.”
