Known for his lightning pace, pinpoint goal-kicking, and unshakeable grit, Girdler became a cornerstone of the Penrith Panthers during the late 1990s and early 2000s. While often overshadowed by flashier names, his contribution to the club and to Australian rugby league has remained a cherished part of NRL history.
“This film isn’t just about footy—it’s about grit, heart, and proving people wrong,” said Netflix Australia’s Head of Originals, Tanya McMillan. “Ryan’s story is a perfect blend of talent and tenacity, and it deserves to be seen on a global stage.”
A Story of Quiet Greatness
Titled The Underdog, the documentary explores Girdler’s journey from a relatively modest start on the NSW South Coast to the top of rugby league’s elite. Over the course of his career, he became a representative regular for New South Wales and Australia, eventually earning the nickname “Girds the Great” for his consistency, composure under pressure, and leadership.
The film features archival footage, intimate interviews with Girdler, former teammates, and coaches—including Brad Fittler, Craig Gower, and Phil Gould—as well as candid reflections from rivals who admired (and feared) his skill on the field.
Among the most emotional segments is a detailed retelling of the 2003 NRL Grand Final, where Girdler played a pivotal role in helping Penrith secure one of the most memorable premierships in club history.
Global Premiere and Rugby League’s Netflix Moment
This marks the first major NRL-focused documentary produced by Netflix with a global release in mind, signaling a new era of international exposure for the game.
“If Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’ made people care about Formula 1, this could be rugby league’s moment to shine,” said one sports media analyst.
Early preview screenings have received strong praise, with critics applauding the documentary’s emotional storytelling, atmospheric soundtrack, and respectful portrayal of Girdler’s humility and heroism.
Release Date and Streaming Details
The Underdog will be available to stream worldwide on Netflix starting July 26, with a special Australian premiere in Penrith featuring Ryan Girdler, past Panthers legends, and NRL officials. Limited advance screenings are also being planned in Sydney, Brisbane, and Auckland.
