Denver Broncos Running Back Damien Nash Dies Suddenly at 24
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Damien Nash, a 24-year-old running back for the Denver Broncos, died suddenly on Saturday, the NFL team confirmed in a statement. According to reports, Nash collapsed following participation in a charity basketball game held in suburban St. Louis and was later pronounced dead. The cause of his death has not yet been officially determined or disclosed by authorities or the team.
Nash had taken part in a charity event organized by his family to benefit heart transplant research, a cause close to the family as his older brother, Darris, had received a heart transplant in recent years. The game was intended to raise awareness and funds for heart health initiatives. Witnesses at the event say Nash appeared to be in good spirits and showed no signs of distress during the game before he suddenly collapsed.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Nash was transported to a local hospital, where attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. His death has left the NFL community, fans, and his teammates in shock.
The Broncos released a brief statement expressing deep sorrow at the tragic loss. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Damien Nash. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and teammates during this incredibly difficult time,” the team said.
Nash had joined the Denver Broncos in 2006 after beginning his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans, who selected him in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. A standout player at the University of Missouri, Nash was known for his athleticism and dedication both on and off the field.
Though his professional career was just beginning, Nash had shown promise as a reliable and hardworking player. In limited action with the Broncos, he rushed for 66 yards on 18 carries and added 36 yards receiving in three games. His sudden death marks the second tragedy to strike the Broncos organization in recent months, following the death of cornerback Darrent Williams on January 1, 2007, who was shot and killed after leaving a New Year’s Eve party.
Family, friends, and teammates are now mourning the loss of a young man remembered for his energy, generosity, and passion for life. A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days, as fans and the NFL community await further information about what caused his untimely death.
