Pato O'Ward only wants FP1 outings for McLaren, not meaningless test sessions

One of the most well-liked and captivating drivers in the NTT IndyCar Series is Pato O’Ward from Monterrey, Mexico. He’s one of its fastest new starters on the racetrack.

The CEO of McLaren Racing, Zak Brown, acknowledged the strength of that combination on March 1 by inking O’Ward to a contract extension.

O’Ward would receive $10.2 million, according to court filings in the continuing litigation in UK Commercial Court between McLaren Racing and Alex Palou and his Alpha Racing USA LLC firm. The team did not disclose the exact financial parameters of the agreement.

Palou, the two-time winner of the NTT IndyCar Series with Chip Ganassi Racing, had a contract with Arrow McLaren that was set to start in 2024. However, he gave notice to the company in August of last year that he would not be joining the operation due to the lack of a clear path to the McLaren Formula One squad.

As a result, according to the attorneys for McLaren Racing, O’Ward was granted a two-year extension to his existing contract, which is valid through 2025.

According to court documents, the Mexican driver, 24, will get payments of $4.2 million in 2026 and $4 million in 2026.
