Done deal: Milwaukee Brewers has finally signed a minor league deal with catcher Francisco Mejía

Milwaukee Brewers has finally signed a minor league deal with catcher Francisco Mejía

According to ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel on Friday, the Milwaukee Brewers have signed veteran catcher Francisco Mejía to a minor league deal.

Mejía was released by the Tampa Bay Rays at the conclusion of 2023 after playing for them for the previous three years. Mejía returned to Tampa Bay for the rest of Spring Training after failing to make an impression with the Los Angeles Angels earlier in the season.

Mejía was released by the Rays after their Opening Day roster purge, and he went unsigned for the next week until signing with Milwaukee.

With veteran free agency signing Gary Sánchez providing backup, the Brewers have All-Star William Contreras holding down the fort at catcher. Mejía isn’t expected to contend for a major league roster position right now, but if Sánchez or Contreras were to go hurt, he would definitely be ready for a call-up.

According to McDaniel, the 28-year-old backstop will be joining the Nashville Sounds in Triple-A.

Mejía made his Major League Baseball debut in 2017 after signing his first professional deal with the Cleveland Guardians in 2012. Mejía was acquired by the San Diego Padres by trade.
