The main cause of Kevin Pillar’s crazy 48-hour experience with the Chicago White Sox was “Article XX(B).”
After being dealt at the deadline, the 35-year-old Pillar played for the Boston Red Sox for the 2020 MLB season. He was released on Friday but re-signed two days later. Why? He was signed as a “Article XX(B) free agent,” making him a unique experienced MLB player. Therefore, even though Pillar was signed to a minor-league contract, he has at least six years of MLB experience.
Before Opening Day, Pillar had the opportunity to opt out of his contract with Chicago because he was a veteran committed to a minor-league contract. Over the weekend, he expressed his commitment to the team to media, saying he was taken aback by his sudden dismissal.

What then transpired? The Chicago Tribune said that general manager Chris Getz wasn’t prepared to guarantee that Pillar would make the squad. With the outfielder’s Article XX(B) status allowing him to walk if desired, Getz stated he believed it would be preferable for all parties to maintain their options open.
“So, I told him that there are a lot of unanswered questions, but I also encouraged him to explore and left the door open for him to return. Getz stated, “I couldn’t guarantee anything,” as reported by the Chicago Tribune.
