The Red Sox make two roster changes and give the WooSox a versatile right-handed batter.

Fort Myers, Florida: On Thursday, the Red Sox announced two roster changes. They sent David Hamilton, an infielder, and Romy Gonzalez, an outfielder, to Triple-A Worcester as options.

Given that Boston has a dearth of left-handed hitters, particularly in the outfield, and Gonzalez is a flexible right-handed batter, the 27-year-old had a chance to make the Opening Day roster. However, Gonzalez will begin the season in Triple A and will have the chance to assist the major league team at some point in the regular season. In the most recent prediction published by MassLive earlier on Thursday, Gonzalez and Hamilton were expected to start the season at Worcester.

On January 31, Boston claimed Gonzalez off of waivers from the White Sox. Between 2022 and 2023, he participated in 86 big league games for the White Sox, registering a.222/.239/.361/.600 slash line.

Last season, in 15 games with Boston, the 26-year-old Hamilton batted 4-for-33 (.121 batting average) with two doubles.

There are just forty guys left on the major league spring training roster. Next Thursday is Seattle’s Opening Day.

There will shortly be more roster decisions made. Three camp veterans, lefty reliever Joely Rodríguez, catcher Roberto Pérez, and first baseman C.J. Cron, will have the opportunity to opt out of their contracts on Friday by 2:00 p.m., if they are not assured a position on the Opening Day roster.
