Max Verstappen’s disastrous attempt on Lewis Hamilton near Budapest at the end of the race prevented him from finishing on the podium of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
On lap sixty-three, the Dutchman and the Mercedes collided entering Turn 1, but it was not the beginning of his troubles at the Hungaroring.
The quadruple world champion’s afternoon did not get any less stressful after he was forced to give up second place to Lando Norris early in the race in order to avoid a penalty for getting an advantage off track. He found a sparring companion in his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase.
Hamilton undercut Verstappen, who had raced a long race in the opening stint. On lap 36, he overtook his former rival after managing to locate him. Regretfully, he would miscalculate at the subsequent turn, relinquishing the lead to the British driver.
From then on, the 26-year-old gradually lost patience with the way the grand prix was going, directing all of his ire against Lambiase.Verstappen was critical of the Red Bull team’s strategy after the squad was again outperformed by Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari during the second round of pit stops.
