It is with a heavy heart that we announce the retirement of University of South Dakota (USD) Coyotes head coach Bob Nielson. After an illustrious coaching career spanning multiple decades, Nielson has decided to step away from the sidelines, marking the end of an era for Coyotes football.

Nielson, who took over as the Coyotes’ head coach in 2016, transformed the program into a competitive force within the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC). Under his leadership, USD made historic playoff appearances, including a memorable run in the FCS playoffs. His commitment to player development and strategic excellence helped shape the Coyotes into a respected team at the national level.

In his statement, Nielson expressed gratitude to his players, coaching staff, and the entire USD community. “Coaching at South Dakota has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said. “The relationships built, the moments shared, and the successes we’ve achieved together will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Athletic Director David Herbster praised Nielson’s impact on the program, calling him a “program builder” who elevated the Coyotes both on and off the field. “Coach Nielson leaves behind a legacy of leadership, integrity, and success. His dedication to his players and to this university has been unparalleled,” Herbster said.

With Nielson’s departure, USD will now begin the search for his successor. Potential candidates will likely include internal staff members as well as external coaches with experience in the MVFC and beyond. Whoever steps in will have big shoes to fill, as Nielson’s influence has left a lasting mark on the program.

Coyotes fans will have the opportunity to celebrate Nielson’s contributions at a special farewell event, with details to be announced soon. As the USD football program turns the page, one thing is certain—Bob Nielson’s legacy will be remembered for years to come.
