UNBELIEVABLE: Detroit Lions Stun Fans with Major Announcement on Club Legend Calvin Johnson Jr

Allen Park, Michigan – The Detroit Lions announced today that Calvin Johnson Jr., a 2021 Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver, will be inducted into the Pride of the Lions during halftime of their Homecoming game against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football (kickoff 8:15 PM ET) on September 30, 2024. Pride of the Lions is a permanent installation at Ford Field that honors the finest players in franchise history.

Detroit Lions Chief Operating Officer Mike Disner revealed the news to Johnson Jr. during the opening remarks of the second annual Calvin Johnson Jr. Foundation Celebrity Golf Outing on July 15 at Detroit Golf Club.

“We are excited to have Calvin Johnson Jr. join the Pride of the Lions,” stated Detroit Lions President and CEO Rod Wood. “His dedication on the field and to the city of Detroit is legendary, and this is a well-deserved honor. We are honored that he will be forever remembered at Ford Field and as a Detroit Lion.”

Johnson Jr. joins 20 other all-time Lions greats on Pride of the Lions, which debuted in 2009. The most recent inductees were OT Lomas Brown in 2023 and LB Chris Spielman in 2021. Other members include DT Roger Brown, DT Alex Karras, WR Herman Moore, CB Lem Barney, S Jack Christiansen, QB Dutch Clark, OL Lou Creekmur, K Jason Hanson, and CB Dick “Night Train” Lane. S Yale Lary, quarterback Bobby Layne, cornerback Dick LeBeau, running back Barry Sanders, tight end Charlie Sanders, linebacker Joe Schmidt, guard Dick Stanfel, running back Doak Walker, and offensive lineman Alex Wojciechowicz.

  • The Detroit Lions selected him as the second overall choice in the 2007 NFL Draft from Georgia Tech.
  • During his nine-season career with the Lions, he started 130 of 135 games and had 731 receptions for 11,619 yards (15.9 average) and 83 touchdowns.
  • Detroit’s team record for career catches, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.
  • In 2021, he was named a first-ballot inductee to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, making him the sixth wide receiver in NFL history and the second Lions player.
  • Was named to the NFL’s 2010 All-Decade Team.
  • Participated in six Pro Bowls from 2010 to 2015.
  • Was named to three First-Team AP All-Pro teams (2011-13) and one Second-Team AP All-Pro in 2010.
