Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews will not play in Game 6 against the Boston Bruins due to an unexplained injury and ongoing illness.
Matthews led the NHL with 69 goals during the regular season and was sixth in points with 107. He’s expected to be among the finalists for the Hart Trophy, though the award will almost certainly go to Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon.
Previously, Matthews missed Toronto’s victory against Boston in Game 5. In the best-of-seven series, the Leafs are behind 3-2 as Matthews has been sidelined for almost the whole time due to illness.
On Wednesday, Matthews skated with the squad; however, at that time, there was no news regarding his condition.
“I assume that more players need to step up? The Leafs defenseman Simon Benoit stated, “There is nothing more we can do about it. “If he’s not in the lineup, we just gotta figure out how to win.”
