Steelers QB Russell Wilson terminates contract with team after background Argument with Management

With the NFL Draft starting on Thursday, I couldn’t help but consider the Steelers’ top selections in each round, ranked one through twelve, during the previous fifty drafts.

The best draft in NFL history occurred in 1974, the year of its Golden Anniversary. Jim Wexell’s book On the Clock: Pittsburgh Steelers lays forth its blueprint. What about best by round, though?

It wasn’t necessary to give rounds 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 any attention. The following, in order: Darren Perry (’92), Rich Erenberg (’84), Mike Webster (’74), Brett Keisel (’02), John Stallworth (’74), John Jackson (’88), and Carlton Haselrig (’89) occupied those slots.

The hardest choices were in rounds 1, 3, and 6, but those will be covered later.

Round 11 ultimately came down to two players: right tackle Justin Strzelczyk (’90) and running back Frank Pollard (’80). Pollard spent nine seasons as a Steelers player. He is sixth in the team’s history with 3,989 running yards. In the 1984 season, which concluded with a defeat to the Dolphins in the AFC Championship Game, he ran for a career-high six touchdowns and a team-high 851 yards of total yardage. Strzelczyk was a nine-season player as well. He started twelve games or more four times, and he was a member of the 1995 squad that was defeated by the Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX. It’s Strzelczyk, then. The Steelers gained 4.1 yards per carry when rushing.
