Portland Trail Blazers in Agreement with Boston Celtics to Trade for Point guard Dalano Banton

Portland, Oregon — Although Jerami Grant, Malcolm Brogdon, and Matisse Thybulle didn’t have much success in their trades, the Trail Blazers didn’t have a completely quiet trade deadline. A league source verified that Portland agreed to trade third-year guard Dalano Banton to the Boston Celtics in exchange for a top-55 protected 2027 second-round selection with only seconds remaining in the game. The contract was initially reported by ESPN.

The 24-year-old Banton brings Portland’s roster up to the necessary minimum of 14 players. He was selected by the Toronto Raptors in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft. The transaction also adds another body to the Blazers’ backcourt after it was revealed on Tuesday that Shaedon Sharpe will require surgery on his core muscles, which would probably keep him out for the most of the season.

For the next season, Banton has a $2.2 million club option. It becomes a $217,533 guaranteed till the 2024–25 season begins if Portland takes it on. Half of Banton’s salary becomes guaranteed if he plays for the Blazers on opening night; the remaining portion is guaranteed if he isn’t released before the league-wide guarantee date of January 10.

Ashton Hagans, a guard with Rip City Remix, is also joining the Blazers on a 10-day deal. Hagans is the second Remix player the Blazers have called up. He was chosen for the G League Up Next match at All-Star Weekend later this month. Taze Moore had previously been signed to a 10-day contract with them, which ended on January 30.

Joe Cronin, general manager of the Blazers, is anticipated to speak.
