In a bold move to solidify their special teams unit, the New York Jets have secured a blockbuster deal with Houston Texans’ kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, signing him to a four-year contract worth $20.4 million. The deal, which includes $10 million in guaranteed money, makes Fairbairn one of the highest-paid kickers in the league.
The Jets’ decision to pursue Fairbairn comes as part of a strategy to improve their kicking game after inconsistent performances from their previous kickers. Fairbairn, who has been with the Texans since 2017, is regarded as one of the more reliable kickers in the NFL, known for his strong leg and clutch performances under pressure. His accuracy has been a major asset for Houston, and the Jets are hoping he can provide the same consistency for them moving forward.
In his career, Fairbairn has connected on 82.7% of his field goals and 92.1% of extra points, making him a steady contributor to the Texans’ special teams. Last season, Fairbairn was particularly impressive, hitting 90% of his field goals, including several critical game-winners. His long-range accuracy is also a significant asset, with multiple 50+ yard field goals under his belt.
Jets’ General Manager Joe Douglas expressed excitement over the acquisition, stating that Fairbairn’s experience and precision will bolster their roster as they look to make a playoff push. Head Coach Robert Saleh also praised the move, emphasizing the importance of special teams in achieving overall success.
With the Jets making this aggressive move, it’s clear they are committed to addressing all aspects of their team as they aim for a successful 2024 season.
