Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff Has finally agreed on a 1-year deal worth $45million with 49ers

Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions had a fantastic season in 2023 by any metric you can find. In addition to yards per attempt, adjusted yards per attempt, and passing yards per game, he was in the top-10 in the league in passing yards (4,575; second), passing touchdowns (30; fourth), completion percentage (67.3 percent; seventh), passer rating (97.9; ninth), and many other measures.

Even last year, Pro Football Focus gave Goff a grade in the top-10 (85.7 overall; 10th-85.2 passing; 6th). In several other deeper metrics, he excelled as well (credit to Player Profiler and Sports Info Solutions).

We are aware of Goff’s weak points. His rigid pocket passing style and 10-yard split in the 40-yard dash make him one of the worst quarterbacks in the league while under duress. In fact, a sundial could probably timing his best-yard split. There aren’t many quarterbacks in the NFL who are more effective when he’s truly rolling, though, especially when he can work in unison from a clear pocket. He is surrounded by weaponry and in rhythm with a play caller, Ben Johnson.

A pass catcher’s drops are a highly individualized statistic that vary widely throughout sources. We have data that can inform us about throws that were on target or off target, catchable or uncatchable, but it’s also highly subjective and varies depending on the source. Goff did great last season by those kinds of metrics (catchable passes, true completion percentage, adjusted completion %, etc.).

Legit Football reports that Goff had the third-most dropped passes in the NFL last season among quarterbacks (higher is obviously worse).
