Miami first baseman Jason Torres has been named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list.

Coral Gables, Florida — USA Baseball announced Thursday that University of Miami first baseman Jason Torres has been named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list, which will continue the process of determining the best amateur baseball player in the country for the 2024 season.

The midseason watch list comprises 45 of the nation’s finest amateur players from high school and college levels, as well as 27 athletes who have made their way into the list since the preseason watch list was announced on February 9.

The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will keep an updated list of athletes throughout the season until the semifinalists are announced on May 20.

“We are honored to recognize the top forty-five amateur players in the country for their outstanding performances thus far this season,” USA Baseball CEO/Executive Director Paul Seiler stated. “There is incredible talent throughout the amateur baseball landscape, and the players on this list are the best of the best. We look forward to seeing how the rest of the season unfolds as we get closer to recognizing the 46th winner of the renowned Golden Spikes Award.”

Torres has emerged as a top hitter in college baseball.

The sophomore slugger has a.434 batting average, eight home runs, and thirty RBI.

As of April 4, Torres is tied for sixth in hits (49) and 16th in average nationally. Within the ACC, the 6-foot-1, 228-pound infielder ranks third in both categories.

Torres has reached base safely in 27 of the Hurricanes’ first 28 games.
