After months of speculation, the Philadelphia Eagles will officially trade Hasson Reddick to the New York Jets. The odd thing is that the Eagles are only receiving a conditional third-round pick in exchange for a pass rusher who has recorded double-digit sacks in four consecutive seasons.
There is good news for Eagles fans, since Reddick’s history suggests that the Jets’ choice is likely to be a second rounder.
“Trade: The Eagles are sending edge-rusher Haason Reddick to the New York Jets for a conditional 2026 third-round pick that could be a second, sources tell ESPN,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter detailed on March 29 on X. “The 2026 selection becomes a second if Reddick plays 67.5% of the time this season and has 10 or more sacks. If not, it will be the third quarter of 2023.”
Heavy Sports recently looked into a Bleacher Report trade scenario in which the Eagles would receive the Baltimore Ravens’ No. 30 first-round pick in exchange for Reddick. It turned out that Reddick’s trading value was lower than some had predicted. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell described the move as a “impressive return” for Philadelphia given the circumstances.
“This is a pretty impressive return for a player the Eagles might have cut if they didn’t find a trade partner,” Barnwell wrote on X on March 29. “That 2026 pick could be pretty high if the Jets don’t have a post-Rodgers plan.”
Reddick is entering the final season of a three-year, $45 million contract. In the end, the Eagles chose to save money by replacing Reddick’s large contract with a much less expensive future rookie.
The pass rusher’s pursuit of a new rich contract most likely had an impact on Reddick’s trade value. Spotrac predicts that Reddick’s next contract will be identical to his current one, with the star’s market worth estimated at $47 million over three years.
Even given the circumstances, it is remarkable that Philadelphia was unable to acquire more in the trade. Few positions are more vital in today’s NFL than pass rushers, particularly veterans like Reddick who excel at getting to the quarterback.
Reddick recorded 38 tackles, 23 quarterback hits, 13 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks in 17 starts in 2023. Anthony DiBona of the Pro Football Network pointed out that Reddick’s actual trade value did not meet fans’ expectations.
“It’s clear that Haason Reddick’s trade value was not nearly as high as fans expected,” DiBona wrote in a March 29 message on X. “That became clear when Reddick was not traded earlier this offseason.
“So the Eagles are now almost certain to receive what they would hope for as a compensatory choice in 2026, assuming Reddick plays out the last year of his present contract. Except that the pick has the potential to be a second-round pick, which is much greater than a compensatory pick,” DiBona added.
“Josh Sweat offered to restructure his deal and stay in Philadelphia for next season. Reddick obviously wasn’t and is properly looking for a huge payout.”
