With the Boston Celtics forward on track to surpass the team mark for the most 3-pointers made in a game, it appeared as though nothing could stop Sam Hauser. Even the NBA record of 14 triples in a game set by Klay Thompson was within reach for him.
However, Hauser’s injured ankle in the third quarter silenced all the discussion of records.
Hauser was forced to miss the remainder of Boston’s comfortable 130-104 victory over the Washington Wizards at Capital One Arena due to the injury. The Celtics advanced to a brilliant 53-14, and head coach Joe Mazulla provided an update on Hauser.
As shown on the NBC Sports Boston postgame footage, Mazzulla informed reporters, “I know he was doing like a just an X-ray after the game.”
Hauser played the lowly Wizards and had his finest performance in an NBA outfit. A career-high 30 points were scored by him on a brilliant 10-of-13 shooting performance from beyond the arc. He joined Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart, who now holds the record with 11 3-pointers made in a game, as the only other Celtics players in team history to hit double digits in 3-pointers in a game.
With six of his seven 3-pointers in the second quarter, Hauser set a franchise record in the first half, scorching the Wizards early.
Barely two and a half minutes into the third quarter, Hauser made his tenth 3-pointer, igniting speculation that he may break the NBA record for most 3-pointers made in a single game. But after firing from deep, Hauser hurt his ankle with less than eight minutes remaining in the third. After his shot, Hauser seemed to injure his ankle near the Wizards bench and took a few steps back.
Even with the injury raising some red flags, Mazzulla was still in awe of Hauser’s outstanding shooting display.
