Everton was given a short-term lift last week when they learned that a team of independent experts, appointed by the Premier League, had largely upheld the club’s appeal against a ten-point penalty for violating sustainability and profitability guidelines. The Blues moved up to 15th place in the standings, five points above the relegation zone, after regaining four of those dropped points.

Even then, the team hasn’t prevailed in a league match since December 16th, which seems like a very long time ago. Despite their better standing, Everton’s winless streak currently extends at nine games, and there is still plenty of room for unexpected events to occur over the campaign.

The Toffees will welcome their former boss David Moyes this afternoon.

The Hammers had a dismal season last year, only somewhat improved by winning the Europa Conference League trophy—the team’s first significant award since winning the FA Cup in 1980. Declan Rice, a valuable asset, ultimately left in the summer, moving across London to Arsenal for a whopping €117 million.

In total, the club raised an astounding €166 million in outgoings, which included surplus-to-requirements players Pablo Fornals and Manuel Lanzini, as well as one-time Blue Nikola Vlasic and striker Gianluca Scamacca. With cash in hand, the East Londoners made big purchases, including midfielder Edson Álvarez (€38 million) and striker Mohammed Kudus (€43 million) from Ajax Amsterdam, who Frank Lampard nearly signed for Merseyside, and defender James Ward-Prowse (€35 million) from Southampton, who was demoted.
