Dillon had hit Joey Logano from behind in the final turn of the Cook Out 400 in Richmond, Virginia, on Sunday night, sending him crashing into the wall. He then clipped Denny Hamlin, causing another crash, and crossed the finish line first for his first win in nearly two years.
Dillon was ranked 32nd in the Cup Series before into Sunday’s race, but his performance propelled him up to 13th on the provisional playoff grid. The decision on Wednesday lowers the total number of playoff qualifiers to 12, with the final three regular-season games to determine the four available slots. If Dillon wins one of the final three races, he will still be qualified for the playoffs overall.
