GAINESVILLE, Fla. — In a powerful display of compassion and leadership, Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway has made headlines off the field by investing $5.3 million of his own money to transform his newly purchased residence into a shelter for homeless youths.

The 19-year-old star athlete announced the project in a press conference Saturday morning, stating, “Football is my passion, but helping people—especially kids with no stable home—is my purpose. I’ve been given a platform, and I want to use it to make a real difference.”

Lagway’s six-bedroom mansion on the outskirts of Gainesville will undergo renovations starting next week, with plans to convert the space into a fully equipped youth shelter. The home will feature living quarters, tutoring rooms, a mental health resource center, and space for career and life skills training.

The initiative, named “DJ’s House of Hope,” is a collaboration with local nonprofits, including Gainesville Youth Reach and the Florida Housing Coalition. Together, they aim to provide long-term support and stability for up to 20 at-risk youth at a time.

University of Florida officials praised Lagway’s bold move. Athletic Director Scott Stricklin said, “DJ’s heart is as big as his talent. He represents everything we hope for in a Gator—dedication, humility, and purpose.”

Despite being one of the nation’s top quarterback prospects, Lagway remains grounded. “This isn’t about fame. It’s about showing people that no matter where you come from, you can be the change.”

Renovations are expected to be completed by early fall 2025, just in time for the next school year.

This act of generosity marks a new chapter in college athletics, where young stars like Lagway are using their influence for real-world impact.
