Maple Leafs Sign Defenceman Blake Smith to Three-Year Entry-Level Contract

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced the signing of promising young defenceman Blake Smith to a three-year, entry-level contract set to begin in the 2025-26 NHL season. The move reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to developing talent from within and strengthening their defensive core for the future.

Smith, 20, has emerged as a standout on the blue line over the past two seasons, earning attention for his steady defensive play and ability to contribute offensively. A product of the Western Hockey League (WHL), Smith recorded 10 goals and 38 assists in 68 games during the 2024-25 season with the Kamloops Blazers, while also maintaining a strong plus-minus rating and logging significant minutes in all situations. Known for his skating ability, hockey IQ, and poise under pressure, Smith has drawn comparisons to current NHL defencemen with two-way capabilities.

Originally selected by the Maple Leafs in the third round (78th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft, Smith has steadily developed into one of Toronto’s top defensive prospects. His improvement at both ends of the ice has impressed the Maple Leafs’ management and coaching staff, who believe he could challenge for a roster spot as early as training camp in 2025.

“We’re excited to officially welcome Blake to the organization,” said Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving in a press release. “He’s a smart, mobile defenceman who has taken significant strides in his development over the past year. We believe he has the potential to be an important part of our blue line in the years to come.”

Smith’s contract carries a cap hit consistent with the league’s entry-level structure and includes performance bonuses. The deal will allow him to continue his development, whether with the Leafs or their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, depending on his progress during the 2025-26 campaign.

For now, Smith remains focused on preparing for the next level. “It’s an honour to sign with a storied organization like the Maple Leafs,” Smith said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to keep working toward my goal of playing in the NHL.”

With the signing of Blake Smith, the Maple Leafs bolster their defensive depth and invest in a player who could play a meaningful role in the franchise’s future success.
