Legendary NBA coach Phil Jackson, who coached both Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant to multiple championships, recently shared his perspective on why he believed Kobe was a more complete all-around player than Jordan. In an interview with ESPN, Jackson praised Bryant’s versatility and ability to take on multiple roles on the court, particularly as the leader and playmaker of his team.
“Kobe’s become the floor leader of a basketball team that was kind of looking for that nature of a player, who could not only be a scorer but also be a playmaker or consistently make big plays at critical times,” Jackson explained. He pointed out that while Jordan was an exceptional player, Kobe had the unique ability to not just dominate as a scorer but also serve as the Lakers’ floor general, adapting his game to fit the team’s evolving needs.
Jackson’s insight carries weight, as he coached Jordan during the Chicago Bulls’ six NBA championships and Bryant during the Los Angeles Lakers’ five championships. While both players are regarded as two of the greatest to ever play the game, Jackson’s remarks highlight Bryant’s growth into a more multifaceted player, particularly in his later years.
