NASCAR Makes another bold Schedule, Taking Local Racers on a Street Race Set in…

The event, The Grant Park 165, has been held for the last two years in Chicago.

Racing is in the blood of Cincinnati, Southwest Ohio and the Tri-State. Kentucky Motor Speedway hosted NASCAR events for several years, while dirt tracks and drag strips are still popular destinations in the area.

Dave Lehman of Lightning Chassis races dirt track. He’s a third-generation racer who took cars to Daytona.

Lehman said dirt racing has become more popular over the years. He said some tracks attract 20,000 to 30,000 fans. He said NASCAR’s interest in bringing the street race to Cincinnati shows how strength of the local racing scene.

From where we’re sitting within 45 minutes to an hour, there are three race tracks,” Lehman said. “Increase that to an hour and a half and you’ve probably added four to five. It’s going on in our region, so the fact that NASCAR has an interest in moving into our city is very positive. I think it would yield good results.”

Brian Gray, who also races for Lightning Chassis, said Cincinnati’s street layout would function well for a street race event.

Mehring Way for instance is a nice place around the stadiums,” Gray said. “It’s nice and open and there’s lots of tight sections through town

Gray said using the bridges across the Ohio River would also be a highlight and bring something different.

Lehman said there would have to be some surface improvements as well as other improvements needed to race stock cars on city streets.
