Despite losing to the Green Bay Packers 48-32 in the wild card round, Mike McCarthy will rejoin the Dallas Cowboys as head coach for the 2024 campaign. Following three consecutive 12-win playoff seasons, McCarthy’s team is the first to miss out on a conference title game, and the Cowboys became the first No. 2 seed to lose since the 14-team structure was implemented in 2020.
However, McCarthy will have another opportunity to put an end to the Cowboys’ nearly three-decade skid without a long postseason run, as confirmed by general manager and owner Jerry Jones.
“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach,” he stated in a statement. “Mike has the highest regular-season winning percentage of any head coach in Cowboys history, and we will dedicate ourselves, in partnership with him, to translating that into reaching our post season goals.”
McCarthy’s contract is up in one year, making this his fifth season with the team. An extension was not mentioned in Jones’ statement.
For the first time since the 1995 campaign, the 60-year-old was brought in to help Dallas get past the divisional round. Thirteen years ago, he and Green Bay won a Super Bowl.
Before Jones hired McCarthy in 2020, McCarthy was sacked from Green Bay in the middle of the team’s second straight losing season in 2018. The Cowboys have only won one playoff game under McCarthy compared to three losses, two of which were in the team’s home opening at AT&T Stadium, where Dallas had won 16 straight regular-season games prior to their loss to Green Bay.
“We will start our process of review and decision-making regarding everything that impacts our team and roster,” Jones stated. “Although at this time we won’t be discussing individual players, extensions, or free agents, it is worthy of our careful examination and evaluation, which it will receive.
“Not just coach McCarthy, but everyone here shares our loss on Sunday. Our athletes. Our mentors. our main reception area. By myself. “We observe and assess coach McCarthy through a holistic lens. Even if our playoff record and the outcome on Sunday disappointed us all, I fully support him in his role as our head coach and our capacity to accomplish our objectives.”
