In their pursuit of securing a new ballpark, the Tampa Bay Rays have reached the bottom of the ninth inning.
Before they can begin construction on the new park, the team needs to receive the final approval from the Pinellas County Commission. The team’s request for over $300 million in tax funds for the project could result in the final approval on July 30.
The Rays have been through a long journey, which included dividing their home games with Montreal and Tampa, or even building a stadium in Ybor City or Tampa. If the Pinellas Commission approves the deal, this will put an end to that journey.
The multibillion-dollar stadium plan will also include a complete redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District once it is approved. As a result of the agreement, the Rays are expected to remain in St. Petersburg for the next three decades.
