According to reports, one or more of the Core Four of the Maple Leafs (Captain John Tavares, Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews, and William Nylander) along with Morgan Rielly, might be the next to go. It is not without its problems, though, both intellectual and practical.

Previous negotiations resulted in no-movement agreements for each of the Core Four. Therefore, there won’t be any deal until Tavares or Marner decide to waive (or are forced to waive) their no-trade contracts.

In order to persuade one or more of the Core Four to think about surrendering their no-movement rights, analysts have stated that the Maple Leafs could—and maybe even ought to—”make life rather miserable for him [Mitch Marner] in his last season in Toronto.” These aggressive negotiation strategies are not advised, though.

No-movement agreements have been previously negotiated by each of the Core Four. Thus, there won’t be any deal until Tavares or Marner decide to waive (or are forced to waive) their no-trade clauses.

Consequently, many have opined that the Maple Leafs ought to contemplate waiving their no-movement provisions in order to “make life rather miserable for him [Mitch Marner] in his last season in Toronto.” Hardball negotiation strategies like this are not advised, though.
