Josef Newgarden, the reigning Indianapolis 500 champion, wiped back tears on Friday while acknowledging that he was embarrassed by his manipulation of the push-to-pass procedure in his season-opening IndyCar win, which has now been revoked. According to the two-time series champion, he is “not a liar” and did not purposefully break the law.

In his first public remarks since IndyCar punished him on Wednesday by taking away his victory from March 10 in St. Petersburg, Florida, Newgarden delivered a tearful 25-minute press conference at Barber Motorsports Park.

Birmingham, Alabama — The reigning Indianapolis 500 winner, Josef Newgarden, wiped back tears on Friday as he took responsibility for his season-opening, since-retracted IndyCar win manipulation and called it an embarrassment. The two-time series champion maintained that he did not purposefully break the rules and that he is “not a liar.”

Newgarden made his first public remarks since IndyCar penalized him on Wednesday by taking away his victory at St. Petersburg, Florida, on March 10 during an emotional 25-minute news conference at Barber Motorsports Park.
