Savage began his racing career in midget and sprint cars, quickly making a name for himself with his aggressive driving style and natural talent. His performances in these series laid the foundation for his rise in motorsports.

Savage made his first appearance at the prestigious Indianapolis 500 in 1972, driving for Patrick Racing. Despite facing mechanical issues, his debut marked the beginning of his presence in one of the most famous races in the world. In his rookie year, Savage showcased his skills at the Trenton Speedway, finishing in second place. This performance demonstrated his potential to compete with the top drivers in the series. Savage secured his first pole position at the California 500 in Ontario. His speed and precision on the track were evident as he outpaced more experienced drivers. Leading up to the 1973 Indianapolis 500, Savage showed impressive speed during practice sessions, consistently posting some of the fastest lap times. His performance during qualifying earned him a solid starting position, raising expectations for race day. On May 30, 1973, during the 57th running of the Indianapolis 500, Savage was running competitively in the race, showcasing his talent and determination. His race was cut short due to a horrific crash on lap 58, which remains one of the most memorable moments in Indy 500 history
