The first Indianapolis 500 winner to win the race twice in a row since Helio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002 is Josef Newgarden. His victory was not without dispute, though. The runner-up, Pato O’Ward, who had been fourth in 2021 and second in 2022 at the Indianapolis 500, was obviously disappointed with his performance. He voiced his frustrations in his postrace interview.
But that wasn’t all. O’Ward had earlier told reporters, “It’s difficult to put into words.” I’m pleased with the work we completed today. We got better, turned around, moved forward, and turned around again. Some individuals are just crazy drivers. We had a lot of close race-enders. Once more, so close. So close, so (crap).
