Over the past few years, Liverpool has had far more hits than misses in the transfer market. The track record of Michael Edwards and Julian Ward as signers has been excellent, and every major acquisition they have made—possibly the exception of Darwin Núñez due to his high cost—has been an exceptional success.

This was among the factors that contributed to the team’s close control over Manchester City during the previous few Premier League seasons. Liverpool only signed players that would strengthen the club overall and wouldn’t be a hindrance to the team.

The recent acquisition of Arthur Melo from Juventus, though, was a mistake. After leaving it to the last minute in the transfer window, Jürgen Klopp thought the team needed another body in midfield, so he signed the Brazilian in the summer of 2022 on a season-long loan as an unexpected option.
