ATLANTA — Alabama made the decision on Saturday to completely change the college football landscape, after controlling the league for the most of the Nick Saban era.
In front of an ecstatic 78,320 spectators inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, redshirt sophomore quarterback Jalen Milroe led the No. 8 Crimson Tide to a 27-24 surprise victory over No. 1 Georgia. He also ran for 39 yards on a game-winning drive. The Bulldogs had a record-breaking 29-game winning streak going into the SEC championship game, but now it’s up to the College Football Playoff selection committee to decide whether they will play for a third consecutive national championship.Given that both teams have a 12-1 overall record, Alabama will also need to wait patiently.
With nine of those championships coming in coach Nick Saban’s 17 seasons, Alabama earned their 30th SEC championship, three more than Georgia (14) and Tennessee (13) combined. That means that during his career in Tuscaloosa, which also included six national titles, the Crimson Tide won an astounding 52.9% of the league titles.
With Saturday’s upset, Saban now has 17 wins in a row in Atlanta, including playoff games, Chick-fil-A Kickoff games, and SEC title games. Tim Tebow, a junior, led Florida to the 2008 national championship squad, which was Alabama’s last opponent in Atlanta.
At the league title game, Georgia fell for just the second time in 47 games, both times to Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide.
