Recently, Kyle Shanahan was questioned about the working relationship between assistant head coach/defense Brandon Staley and defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen this season. Here is what Shanahan stated, as provided by the 49ers public relations team.
Q: Sorensen informed us that prior to receiving this new position, he hadn’t spoken with you very often. Were you familiar with him? Was there anything you needed to know about him before elevating him? What information about him, even while he was employed, did you know over the years
SHANAHAN: “I mean, I think that before this year, in our two years together, I really got to know him.” Prior to that, it was mostly from people who had worked with him and whom I know quite well. People who knew him as a player, people who had worked with him in Seattle, people in Jacksonville, and so forth. males who know the kind of males we like are the ones who could describe him to me in detail. He was a candidate in his first year here. He had just been here a year when we had a lot of conversations about him perhaps becoming a coordinator, and I didn’t think he was quite ready for that.
