Jesse Marsch press conference: Leeds boss delivers transfer update as agonising Liam Cooper fitness update is delivered

After being hired on Monday night, Jesse Marsch will captain the Canadian men’s national team at the 2024 Copa America this summer. The American coach gained recognition at European clubs like RB Leipzig and Leeds United, but he hasn’t held a managerial position since leaving the English team more than a year ago. In his spare time, the coach has been doing Champions League analysis for CBS Sports.

This is not Marsch’s first stint as a coach in Canada. Back in 2011, the Wisconsin native was chosen Montreal’s first manager in Major League Soccer. But Marsch was limited to one season above the border. The coach’s exit was not directly related to his shortcomings during the team’s season of expansion. Rather, disagreements between Marsch and the club’s higher administration caused the breakup.

While Canada is undoubtedly winning with the acquisition of Marsch, there are some unexpected facts to the agreement. To begin with, the coach’s formal title is Head Coach of the Men’s National Team for MLS Canada. The three Canadian MLS teams’ charitable efforts are to blame for this. The majority of Marsch’s income is funded by executives from Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal who oversee Canada.

There are a number of possible issues with the MLS teams’ participation in the national team. There are concerns that Marsch’s team may be under too much supervision from these clubs. For example, the three might put pressure on Marsch to choose more players from their teams, as they are effectively covering the coach’s wage.
