SAD NEWS: Minnesota Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens has been suspended because of…

The selection of J.J. McCarthy by the Minnesota Vikings with the 10th overall choice in the 2024 NFL Draft virtually guaranteed the arrival of another quarterback in Minnesota.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens (12) talks to teammates during the second half of an NFL football game against the Chicago Bears, Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, in Chicago. The Vikings won 29-13. (

In 2024, Jaren Hall or Nick Mullens will probably be cut, and McCarthy and Sam Darnold will compete for the starting job. Following OTAs and the required minicamp, Mullens might end up in one of these three locations this season.

Naturally, back in April, the Chicago Bears made the decision to choose Caleb Williams with the first overall choice. Williams was officially announced as the starting quarterback for the Bears in 2024 before rookie minicamp ever got underway in Chicago.

The Bears don’t have many strong quarterbacks besides Williams, which is perhaps one of the reasons for the early announcement. This offseason, they traded Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tyson Bagent, who signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023, is currently listed as the quarterback number two. Austin Reed, another UDFA, and Brett Rypien are also employed by them. Maybe Mullens could fill that role for the Bears, who could need an experienced backup in that area.
