February 27Upon his appointment as Tennessee’s new head football coach late last month, Josh Heupel emphasized that the team “has to lock down our borders.”

Friday afternoon demonstrated just how difficult a climb Heupel must endure.

The five-star quarterback Ty Simpson of Martin’s Westview High School declared his commitment to Alabama on CBS Sports HQ. In the 247Sports.com composite rankings for the 2022 signing cycle, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound talent, who chose Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide over Clemson and Ole Miss in addition to the Volunteers, is ranked as the third pro-style quarterback nationally and as the 27th best prospect overall.

When asked by CBS Sports why he choose Alabama, Simpson responded, “Being close to home and playing for the guy who’s won seven national championships.” I’m playing for a man who can coach players. Being able to train under the best, play with the best, and get ready for the NFL is incredibly exciting.”

This past season, Simpson passed for 1,888 yards and 20 touchdowns against four interceptions on 124 of 203 passes (61.1%) to lead Westview to the second round of the TSSAA Class 3A playoffs.

Simpson’s father, UT Martin coach Jason Simpson, is a 14-year veteran of the Skyhawks with an 87-73 record. Although UT Martin did not play any games in the fall, their seven-game spring schedule will begin on Sunday at Murray
