The Los Angeles Rams put their future at risk by selecting the University of California signal caller, only for Goff to have the most porous rookie season in NFL history. The organization then signed offensive wunderkind Sean McVay as head coach, who transformed Goff into a two-time Pro Bowler and led the Rams to Super Bowl LIII.

After that spectacular rise, Goff plateaued, eventually being traded to the Detroit Lions in a blockbuster deal that brought Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles. Stafford won the Super Bowl in his first season out West, and Goff was viewed as a temporary replacement until the Lions acquired their quarterback of the future.

Since then, a strange thing has happened: Goff is suddenly good again. Goff has regained his Pro Bowl form while playing with a great wide receiver in Amon-Ra St. Brown and a superb offensive coordinator in Ben Johnson. He guided the Lions to their first NFC Championship Game participation since 1991 last year, falling just short of the franchise’s first Super Bowl trip.

With Goff establishing himself as the franchise’s leader, Lions general manager Brad Holmes says the team would do whatever it takes to keep the quarterback in Motown for the foreseeable future. Holmes stated on 97.1 The Ticket that Goff “has earned” a hefty extension.
