NFL official responds to Josh Jacobs of the Packers and Saquon Barkley of the Eagles’ contracts

Josh Jacobs, the ball carrier for the Green Bay Packers, and Saquon Barkley, the running back for the Philadelphia Eagles, may soon be considered overpriced, according to at least one anonymous NFL official.

Regarding Barkley and Jacobs, the executive remarked, “I’m surprised they got paid,” in a conversation with Jeff Howe of The Athletic. “I didn’t see anything to alter recent history this offseason.”

Famous running backs including Barkley, Jacobs, and Jonathan Taylor Colts were said to be looking for extensions, but none of them had been granted by the beginning of the summer. This was one of the most talked-about topics of the previous offseason. Barkley and the New York Giants reached a modified franchise tag agreement in July, and in late August, the Las Vegas Raiders gave Jacobs a raise in basic pay for the 2023 season.

In October of last year, Taylor agreed to a $42 million, three-year deal that includes a $26.5 million guarantee. That turned out to be a sneak peek into what was in store for March 2024.

Early in the NFL’s legal tampering free agency period, it was rumored that Barkley and the Eagles had reached an agreement on a $37.75 million, three-year contract for up to $46.75 million, of which $26 million was completely guaranteed after signing. Jacobs signed a four-year, $48 million ($12.5 million guaranteed) contract to move from Las Vegas to Green Bay at about the same time.

At a time when, as Howe observed, teams “prefer a budget-conscious approach and a backfield rotation to starting running backs,” neither the Giants nor the Raiders appeared to be overly concerned about the starting running backs’ exits.
