Red Bull is hesitant to satisfy Sergio Perez’s demand for a multi-year contract, while they ponder giving Alex Albon a fairytale return to his former seat.

Perez’s great start to the new season has helped his prospects of signing a new contract. He has three podium places in the first four races, and his qualifying performance, which was so terrible in 2023, has significantly improved.

Red Bull’s current attitude on the second seat alongside Max Verstappen is that Perez will lose. The 34-year-old has put himself back in contention for a spot in F1’s top team in 2025.

But not, it appears, unless he agrees to one of his primary contract requests. The Mexican wants a multi-year contract.

And after Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix, consultant Helmut Marko, who has substantial control over who drives for both of Red Bull’s F1 teams, explained why he is hesitant to give Perez the security he seeks. “If he has a secure contract for two years, there is a risk that he will slack off,” the Austrian diplomat said.

The other reason Red Bull does not want to hand Perez a 2026 contract is that they are considering bringing Albon back into the fold. The British-Thai racer was dropped after the 2020 season and replaced by Perez, leaving him without a ride for the following year.
