I’m Leaving Miami Hurricanes for Linebacker Sam Brooks Jr, RB Gage Batten Announce His Decision

This autumn, Saint Augustine’s University will not host an HBCU football game as it works to emerge from a financial crisis that might endanger its continued existence. Dr. Marcus Burgess, the interim president, states in an exclusive interview with CBS 17 that the football program won’t play on the field in 2024.

Due in significant part to a multi-million dollar tax lien, two years of nonpayment to creditors, and loss of accreditation, Saint Augustine’s University is in severe financial distress. “It will take roughly 27 to 28 million dollars and 30 million for good judgment because there’s still deferred maintenance pieces that have to happen,” Dr. Burgess stated in the interview. Payroll for the school is going to be delayed for the third time in a row. Following a 0–10 campaign, Saint Augustine’s football team fired first-year head coach Howard Feggins two thirds of the way through the season. Feggins is suing the school for a variety of reasons, including wrongful termination. Since 2012, SAU football has failed to produce a winning season.

The CIAA will have just 11 football teams for at least one season as a result of SAU’s withdrawal. SAU was slated to face Elizabeth City State and Lincoln University in addition to every school in the CIAA South, including Fayetteville State, Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone College, Shaw, and Winston-Salem State.
